UPSC Strengthens Selection Process for State Police Chiefs
- The Supreme Court has issued a directive to all states and Union territories, urging them not to appoint police officers as acting Director General of Police (DGP).
- Instead, states are required to submit the names of senior police officers to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for consideration as potential candidates for the position of DGPs or Police Commissioners.
- The UPSC will rigorously assess the submitted names and create a list of the three most qualified officers.
- States can then appoint one of these officers as the police chief, with a strong focus on meritocracy and transparency in the selection process.
